The pros of working at Nets is that they have monthly workshops from time to time. In fact, this coffee workshop was the first workshop to actually interests me because I excitedly thought to myself that this will be my only chance to actually learn the skills of a barista and perhaps ambitously one day own my very own cafe. But oh boy, I actually had a super hard time locating their workshop venue because it is held in a very foreign industrial area @ 127 Defu Lane and I was the second last one to reach because I was late trying to find my way around under the scorching hot sun. After locating the industrial building, I couldn't find any public lift or stairs to bring me to level 2. Luckily for me, I contacted Dutch Colony staff and they were super helpful that the kind lady actually came down to walk me to the venue. The workshop has already started with everyone as soon as I reached and the staff hands everyone a clipboard, a marker and a paper cup where they ask us to think of 5 words to best describe about coffee; cafe, love, chill, smell & fragrance. My mind was really empty and couldn't really think of any words. In addition, they ask us to choose our ideal coffee from the 4 choices given; namely expresso, mocha, white and chocolate. I naturally choose white as it is the only coffee that wasn't that bitter with a small amount of milk. They then guid us through 6 different glass of grind coffee beans powder for us to smell and differentiate the different flavours which are then poured with hot water for us to taste the coffee. Everyone was grouped into 4 groups whereby the group with the most correct guesses get to bag home a bag of their in-house coffee powder. The venue is actually part of their warehouse production as there is coffee machines all around to grind and pack coffee powder into bags. Beside that, the company owes 3 cafes located at UE Square, 1 Fusionopolis Way and 113 Frankel Ave. They have monthly coffee workshop for those who are interested to learn more about coffee. Instead this workshop is getting to know more about coffee through your senses rather than the scope of learning how to become a barista. They say that ladies naturally have better senses than mens but I think I did quite badly because I feel all the 6 different coffee powder smell the same to me. After smelling to much coffee, our nose tend to make our brain think that all the powder is the same so they told us one trick was to smell our own armpits or sweat before smelling the next one and it was hilarous. You guys may check out their Facebook page if you are interested in the workshop. They also organise different types of coffee workshops. Meanwhile, the location of the workshop is at Dutch Colony Coffee Co. (Roastery)127 Defu Lane 10 #02-03 Singapore, 539234.
